If you’re new to sunbed tanning in Cape Town, something you might be wondering is… “What to wear for sunbed tanning?“
It’s a common question, and getting it right can sometimes make a bit of a difference in achieving an even tan.
I’m Kirst and I have a home sunbed tanning studio in the southern suburbs of Cape Town… And I’ll guide you through the do’s and don’ts of indoor sunbed tanning so that you can feel comfortable and confident when you go into a tanning bed.
Do’s: What to Wear for Sunbed Tanning
Some things to consider when going into a sunbed tanning session:
Wear as little as you want
The best way to get an even tan is to expose as much skin as you’re comfortable with.
Many of my clients choose to tan in a bikini, underwear, or even nude (if privacy allows, which my home studio does allow).
If you go for a bikini, opt for one with minimal straps to try and avoid uneven tan lines or tanning the strap lines like when you’re lying in the sun.
Choose lightweight, breathable fabrics
If you prefer some coverage, wear soft, lightweight fabrics like cotton underwear or a seamless bikini.
And maybe avoid anything too tight that could leave pressure marks on your skin.
Remove all your jewellery and accessories
Metal accessories can heat up in the sunbed and cause discomfort or even burns, so I recommend removing everything you can.
Take off rings, necklaces, watches, and earrings before your session.
Apply an appropriate tanning lotion
A quality sunbed tanning lotion helps your skin tan more effectively while keeping it hydrated.
If you’re unsure which one to use, ask me for recommendations… I’m happy to help!
Protect sensitive areas
If it’s your first time or you have sensitive areas, consider using a towel or protective stickers over certain parts of your body.
This prevents overexposure and irritation.
Don’ts: What to Avoid Before and During Your Sunbed Tanning Session
And some ‘don’ts to consider once you’ve booked your tanning sessions.
Avoid tight clothing right before or after tanning
Tight bras, jeans, or leggings can leave marks on your skin, making your tan uneven.
Loose, comfy clothing is the way to go.
Don’t apply makeup, perfumes, and/or even deodorants before your session
Before your tanning session, cleanse your skin thoroughly.
Makeup, perfumes, and deodorants can create a barrier that prevents an even tan and may cause skin irritation under the UV light.
Skip the heavy lotions and oils
While moisturizing is essential, avoid applying thick creams or oils right before your session.
They can block UV rays and result in a patchy tan.
Don’t forget eye protection
Wearing protective goggles is a must!
The UV rays from sunbeds can be harmful to your eyes, even if your session is short.
Usually the sunbed studio should supply you with these, I have them available for all my sun tanning clients.
Avoid excessive tanning sessions
Your skin needs time to develop color naturally.
Spacing out your tanning sessions helps maintain a long-lasting glow while keeping your skin healthy.
